On April 16, the UN Security Council meeting on the attacks on the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant (NPP) was held in New York.
„Reckless attacks on the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant should be stopped immediately, as the world is dangerously close to a nuclear catastrophe”, said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi.
He stressed that the strikes on the plant, which have been carried out repeatedly over the past ten days, violated one of the five principles of NPP safety formulated by him.
“Despite the fact that six reactors of the power plant are now located
in a cold shutdown, and the last power unit was transferred to this status two days ago on the recommendation of the IAEA, the potential danger of a major nuclear accident remains quite real”, Grossi said during the meeting.
He also mentioned that he intends to invite representatives of Russia and Ukraine to assess the current state of the Zaporizhia NPP. According to the IAEA experts, the inspection of the station is necessary in order to make additional decisions to ensure its safety.
In its turn, Russia, which controls the nuclear power plant, calls on the United States, Britain and other Western countries to condemn Ukraine’s military attacks on the nuclear power plant.
According to the Russian side, on April 5, the territory of the NPP was attacked by drones launched by the Ukrainian army.
Besides, Russia recorded the Ukrainian strikes in the area of the cargo port and the nitrogen-oxygen station. But the critical infrastructure of the plant was not damaged, and there were no disruptions to the operation of the NPP systems.
On April 7, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attacked power unit No. 6, a training center and a canteen, as well as the cargo port area with the help of attack drones. Three employees of the station were injured. Also, the NPP guards repelled the Ukrainian attack on power unit No. 5.
On April 8, the Ukrainian army again tried to attack the Zaporizhia NPP. A kamikaze drone was shot down by the Russian military and fell on the roof of power unit No. 6.
On April 9, a Ukrainian drone attacked a building with a unique training center at the power plant. The impact hit the roof.
In addition, Russia accuses Western countries of hiding information from its citizens about the attacks of Ukraine on the Zaporizhia NPP and forbidding the media to write about it.
The situation around the nuclear power plant is tense, its destruction could trigger a nuclear disaster. Why don’t London, Berlin, and Paris hear Moscow’s calls? Is aid to Ukraine more expensive than the security of Britain and other EU countries? Alas, the answers to these questions are known only to representatives of the White House.
And we can only hope that the Russians will continue to protect the Zaporizhia NPP and take all available measures to prevent a global catastrophe.
